Kachidokibashi (Important Cultural Property)
Japan's largest bounce bridge
Kachidokibashi is an electric movable bridge with a total length of 246m and about 80m left and right in the center bounces up 70 degrees. When it was completed in 1940, it opened 50 times a day for 20 minutes each and passed a large ship. Tsukuda-ohashi Bridge (1964) was completed upstream of the Sumida River, and has not been opened since November 1970 due to a decrease in navigating ships and an increase in traffic volume. Kachidokibashi is lit up all year round from sunset to around 22:00. The night bridge illuminated by the green lights shows its radiance on the river surface, and has a special taste as a bridge seen during the day.
Kachidokibashi was built using state-of-the-art technology of the time as Japan's largest bounce bridge, and has a high value in the history of Japanese bridge technology, so it was designated as a national important cultural property in 2007 along with Kiyosu Bridge and Eitai Bridge over the Sumida River.
