The birthplace of the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce
Japan's First Chamber of Commerce
At that time, the Meiji government emphasized the promotion of foreign trade, but since there was no representative organization that gathered the opinions of domestic business and industry, it was difficult to revise the unequal treaties with foreign countries. Therefore, Eiichi Shibusawa encouraged the establishment of an organization representing business and industry, and in 1878, Japan's first Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce, was established.
