Englishman William Adams, a navigator of the Orient Dispatch of the Dutch East India Company, drifted ashore in Sashiu, Oita Prefecture due to a storm in Keicho 5 (1600). Later, he became a trade adviser to Ieyasu and contributed to the development of Japan-UK trade. At present, the land of Anhari residence in Muromachi 1-chome was designated as a Tokyo Historic Site in June 1930, and a monument was built by local volunteers in July of the same year, but was destroyed by the war.
