Theatre that first used the symbolic gas lamps of Civilization and enlightenment

Morita-za, one of the three Edo shrines, opened in Kibiki-cho in 1660, renamed Morita-za in 1858, and changed from Asakusa Saruwaka-cho in 1872 to Shin-Tomicho in 1872. We moved to and renamed Shintomi-za in the same year. Shintomiza was the first theater to use gas lamps that were touted as a symbol of Civilization and enlightenment, and Danjuro, Kikugoro and Sadanji's performances and new historical dramas (live history) became popular, and welcomed the Grand United States General.
