Habu Gen inkstone monument

InDesignated Cultural Property, the tomb of a famous physician for treating eye diseases

Genseki Habu was a Dutch physician in the late Edo period and was born in Yoshida, Aki Province (present-day Hiroshima Prefecture). He served as a doctor of the Shogunate and was especially good at ophthalmology. Later, he studied eye disease treatment from Siebold, a German doctor who came to Japan as a doctor with Dutch trading post, and as a thank-you gift to the general, he was involved in the Siebold Incident, but later he gained fame as an ophthalmologist in Fukagawa.
