Seafarer Education Out of Shonochi
Monument to a seafarer education facility founded by Yataro Iwasaki
After the Meiji Restoration, the shipping industry in Japan was standing out internationally, and needed a school education system for ship staff.
In November 1875, at the order of Secretary of the Interior, Toshimichi Okubo, Yataro Iwasaki established the Mitsubishi Merchant School, which later became the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
Initially, this school connected Narumyomaru in the Sumida River to become a school building, and all the students were settled on board to provide modern seafarer education.
