Ryogoku Hirokoji Monument
★ Fire-cutting areas established based on the lessons learned from the Great Fire of the Meiryaku era
Based on the lessons learned from the Great Fire of the Meiryaku era (1657), Ryogoku Bridge was built as evacuation route, and the area along the bridge was designated as a "fire protection area".
This firebreak area became Ryogoku Hirokoji, and as one of the three major Hirokojis in Edo, along with Ueno and Asakusa, it became one of the leading stations full of entertainment houses, playhouses, and summer boats.
