Ryogoku Hirokoji Monument
★ A fire reclamation area established based on the lessons learned from the Great Fire of the Meiryaku era
Based on the lessons learned from the Great Fire of the Meiryaku era (1657), Ryogoku Bridge was built as a evacuation route, and the area along the bridge was designated as a "fire sanctuary."
This firebreak area became Ryogoku Hirokoji, and as one of the three major Hirokoji in Edo, along with Ueno and Asakusa, it became one of the leading prime places full of sightsee huts, playhouses, and cool boats.
